Introduction to the Conferences
of the 6th edition of the YEE regatta and conferences:
Theme: The Business of Ecology
In few months time Ecology and Sustainable Development have been taking an ever increasing importance in national,
European and world policy. Is this a mass media and popular phenomenon, stripped of any economic rationalism?
Is this an awakening by all social, economic and political actors that from now on nothing will be like before any more,
that new policies with uncertain side-effects must be taken to avoid consequences which are more and more visible?
Up to what point is the general public opinion manipulated ?
Is sustainable development from now on an essential strategic base of every company?
If such is the case, what is to be integrated in this strategy, when and how fast? What do other non-European economies
undertake as measures? Do the new European regulations in favour of sustainable development represent a danger or an
opportunity to the Belgian entrepreneurs?
Can your company 'surf' on the wave of sustainable development?
The Ecology of Business
Consumers, governments and companies up and down the supply chain are all
seeking ways to reduce their environmental impact and increase their long-run sustainability.
For companies, the key goals are to become more efficient - to get more output per unit of input - while
earning profits and maintaining the trust of their stakeholder.
Our current industrial economy is operating a transition towards a more sustainable economy.
Green taxes appear to be the most viable options. By phasing in taxes on water, territory, and now carbon production,
businesses will be forced to internalize their costs and adapt production processes. While prices are already rising,
this creates a market where smaller companies with more efficient processes can compete. Thus, a climate is created where
innovation is not only encouraged but required for monetary success.
